The Art of Songwriting

So much goes into creating a hit song...you think you have what it takes? Let's take songwriting, how do you write a hit? Kathy Unruh tackles the idea in this ezine article.

Did you know that good songwriting is often the key to establishing a successful music career? But more than that, it can be fun! When you write a song you are able to express yourself in new and creative ways. Whether you're sad, happy, angry, or in love... with words, you can fly!
Freedom of expression is one of the greatest priviledges we have, but with it comes some responsibility. Words are very powerful and have been used successfully by many for better, or worse. When writing a song, consider how your words are going to impact your listener. Do you wish to alienate them, or draw them into your perspective on things?
A good song will create an emotional reaction in people, and that's exactly what you're trying to achieve! You want to get your listener to feel with you. You want to move them emotionally. You want them to like your song and be willing to listen to it again and again. If you can get your audience to identify with you on some level, you will be on the road to creating a good song.
As you are stirring up your creative juices you may discover that finding just the RIGHT word is sometimes a bit frustrating. But with the RIGHT songwriting tips and resources it becomes a lot easier! Here are three of the most important songwriting tools you should have:
1. DICTIONARY - A dictionary is essential when writing. Besides giving you the correct meaning of a word, it will also help you to express yourself more clearly. You will discover new words while expanding your vocabulary too!
2. THESAURUS - A thesaurus is another important tool to help with creating your songwriting material. You can use a thesaurus to find different words that have similiar meaning.
3. RHYMING DICTIONARY - As the name implies, a rhyming dictionary organizes words that rhyme in alphabetical order using the vowel sounds A E I O U. For example, if you were looking for a word that rhymes with Abel you would look under A sounds. Words rhyming with Abel would be listed in alphabetical order.
There isn't really a secret formula for writing a good song because determining what is "good" is subjective and a matter of personal opinion (some great songs have broken all the so called "rules"). However, many successful songwriters have used the following format to write a "Hit" song:
The Art of Writing A Good Song cont....

#BlackGirlsRock

Yes, I hashtagged it!

You know what, we DO!

As I watched the B.E.T. Black Girls Rock special, something happened. That's exactly what happened, I felt special. I watched as my colored rainbow of powerful Black women showed the audience that despite, popular opinion, despite the hardships we have faced as women, despite being beaten down we have always been and will always be a strong, unstoppable force when we decide to be who we are.

I am proud of the achievements we have made as women and the obstacles we have overcome. It is because of that, I salute my sisters, because truth be told #BlackGirlsRock

My favorite performance of the evening came when four of my favorite singers almost brought me to tears as they rendered the soulful "Four Women". I remember the first time I heard that song. Written by Nina Simone (RIP), the song never fails to make me reflect on who I am and where I fit in that story.

So reflect today, Who are you?
Are you Aunt Sara?
Are you Saffronia?
Are you Sweet Thing?
Are you Peaches?

Kelly Price, Marsha Ambrosius, Jill Scott, Ledisi

So today remember who you are, and how you became the strength that you've become and every time you look in the mirror tell yourself. "YOU ROCK!"

RIP - Gregory Isaacs

"The Cool Ruler", Reggae sensation Gregory Isaacs died at the age of 59 at his London home this morning. Isaacs is best known for his super hit "Night Nurse", but I'll remember him for ballads like ‘Love is Overdue’ and ‘All I Have Is Love’.

At the beginning of this year, Isaacs' road manager Copeland Forbes said that Isaacs was, "in the UK doing some medical tests. As you all know, he had some problems with his legs from last year which resulted in cancellation of tours, and in the last 12 months he had a very hectic year traveling all over the globe doing performances".

Jamaica's Minister of Culture, Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange hailed Isaacs as one of the great pioneers of Jamaican pop music assisting in the crusade to globalize Reggae music.
“His career was not only about singing: he was a singer, a songwriter, music producer, promoter and recording executive. Few Jamaican artistes can match this versatility, and even fewer were able to succeed in so many areas of entertainment.

Music Monday - J.Ovanni

"I've got two damn words for ya, I'm Ready"
If you didn't know, understand that you have just been informed. If you had to infuse Craig David, Usher and a little Chris Brown, you'd probably end up with

J.Ovanni

Listening to J.Ovanni you're reminded that artists are meant to leave their heart on a track. I had "Criminal Love" on repeat for about an hour before I realized I was still listening to it and singing along. That's how clean the track is.

J.Ovanni sounds like he's comfortable with the music and that's what makes it playable. He's not trying to be someone, he's just out to show you who he is. And he's not stopping until the world knows his name and his sound!

Signed to independent label, 707 Entertainment Group the smooth tones of  J.Ovanni are a welcomed addition to the music industry that had for a moment seemed to throw aside talent for gimmicks. In this new class of entertainer, I give J.Ovanni an above average grade and expect to hear and see more from in in the near future.

Kid Fury's Blog: 10 Hip-Hop Sayings That Must Die! (Burr!) | VIBE

I read the following recently and I must say I wholeheartedly agree....

My question is Why are we allowing people we don't know to shape and mold our everyday vocabulary. I keep trying for the most part to figure out what they mean anyway. It's funny because these are generally the same people that actually promote their own sense of individuality. Yet their fans become a cloned mass.
10) ROGER DAT(Young Money: "Roger that! Fuck around and never get Roger back!") - Unless you are in the military or playing G.I. Joe, this term does not need to come out of your face...ever. It didn't sound cute when Tyga 'nem said it, so how do you think you sound?
9) BLING(Hot Boys: "Bling Bling, every time I come around yo' city.") - Really? Why are people still saying this?...

Artist Beware - Pushing Your Brand

From the moment you begin to think about a career as an artist, your mindset should always be "As a product what am I selling?" As an artist you need to figure out who you are and work that angle. Whether you're promoting yourself as a sex symbol, a thug, a goody goody, decide who you are and work on promoting that. Because the bottom line is, YOU ARE A PRODUCT!!

BE WHO YOU ARE - Fans can see through a ruse, and just as quickly as they "made" your career they will be sure to break your career. Fans are the best researchers on the planet when an artist is on their radar. You promote this thugged out lifestyle and they find out you got straight A's in school and were a model citizen. They will blast that EVERYWHERE!

DON'T BE AFRAID - A lot of times you can't see what is right in front of you. So don't be afraid to ask someone else about your character and what about it that you can promote to your fan base.

DON'T DO EVERYTHING - You know who you are, remain true to that! Why help advertise Whiskey if you don't even drink Champagne. Don't jump to endorse a product that you yourself wouldn't encourage friends and family to support. Aside from that, what you do at the beginning of your career could come to bite you back later!

MARKETING VS TALENT - So you think you're more talented than Top Ten Platinum Record Rapper A? While this maybe true, he/she is still ahead in the game. You think you've got the talent, it's time to work on your marketing strategies.

TALENT VS MARKETING - You want to go the route of letting you talent propel your career? Okay, then work on your craft hire the best you can with the resources you've got. Take a good at EVERY option available to you and utilize it. Vocal coaches/trainers, lessons, CD's DVD's, some acting lessons, EVERYTHING! And present yourself as the most TALENTED artist available.

YOU are your brand! And as much effort as any major brand puts into their product, you need to do the same! Get noticed, be accessible or at least appear to be accessible.

Finally, if you believe in you, you will always push your brand so the simple thing is "Believe in YOU!"

Music Monday - Who's Got Next??

I listen to a lot of music over the course of my day. Some new, some old. Some of which I wish I'd never subjected myself to. This weekend I listen to music as usual, and I came across a very nice girl group (actually they found me). If you haven't already done so, meet

FORTUNE

Klisha, Lindsey, and Kharmony have brought the 90's girl power to the millennium. They say that that their style is an infusion of Urban, Pop and R&B, I simply think they ROCK!!

Here they are with their Cosmo Star Launch contribution. Making it to the top 3 and you can see why

When I say "I miss music", Fortune actually reminds me of what it is that I miss. I miss harmonies, I miss passion, I miss REAL singers. I think Fortune can help bring all of that back.

With group acts (both male and female), in such a rarity these ladies have what it takes to be the next platinum girl group. They did mention one of my favorite girl groups of all time as being an influence so maybe they are on the right track.

TGIFunky

It's a funky Friday again and I'm feeling like turning the funk factor up just a notch.

Now the younguns' are familiar with the "autotuned" appeal of T-Pain. Which by the way, I don't get. But it does take me to a funk-tified memory of a group that I can't help but dance to.
When you talk Funk you can't do it with out talking bout the genius yes I said genius of ...

ZAPP

That large print is deserved!

Call them Zapp or Zapp and Roger, just know that they're awesome! It's like funk had a baby and the baby grew up to be this band!!

The original members were brothers Roger, Larry, Lester, Tony and Terry "Zapp" Troutman. Why was all that talent in one family you ask? I don't know ask the Jacksons or the Osmonds or the Pinkett-Smiths.

All that aside, and doing away with the many, many members that have passed through this band (Shirley Murdock was once a member) they have been consistent with the funk and on this Friday, I give them a Funky Thumbs Up!

Come It's Friday get your dance on....you know you want to!

Retro Thursday - The Color of the 80's

Ok, I'm an 80's Junkie let's get that out there! While I loved the energy of the 90's. There was an expressionism of the 80's that has been trying to re-surge for the last two decades.

My mother would say my 80's was dress up and costumes. Boy George, Cyndi Lauper and Prince fan right here! But it wasn't just the chameleon-ism of that decade that I fell in love with. To me the 80's was filled the "I've got to make the music that makes me happy" attitude.

When I think about then and now, it's like to make music you have to follow a pattern. People won't listen unless the formula is followed to the letter. It's because of that, I still rock a little Billy Ocean on my ipod, and get on the floor when I hear Billy Idol.

I think we'll get it soon enough, that emotion and expression that we once had in music...but until then....

AND MY THEME SONG!!!

The Music Business - Are You On Your G.R.I.N.D.

Last Night an industry professional woke me up with some words that I'd like to share here...
Hustle is about attitude. Being a go-getter one almost has to bend the rules in order to get what he or she wants. Hustle coupled with a little luck can sometimes bring to reality a dream.
Many artists really don't pay enough attention to the business side of their career and consequently end up broke, in bankruptcy court. I draw attention to a popular artist that I heard has filed for bankruptcy for the second time in her career!
That was a sidebar, but I want to talk about the hustle of the game.
I ALWAYS laugh when I hear someone say "they stay on their grind". It would be applaudable if it were true.

What do I consider staying on your G.R.I.N.D?
G - Give it your best shot! If you intend on being a success, you have to give the game the best that you have. No half stepping, no ifs, ands, or maybes. This is what you want to do go get it!
RReady! This is about preparedness! Someone asks you to spit some lyrics, sing a verse, play a melody; nothing but the God Lord himself should be able to stop you from doing that! Be ready to "do what you do"

I - Insist! When one door closes, insist that the no is not the end for you. Insist that it doesn't end there, find another avenue! Pay attention to the direction your path is taking and go for it with a fervor that no one else can
N - Network!...back in the day all an artist had was a demo and a prayer...now there's FACEBOOK, TWITTER, MYSPACE, USTREAM, YOUTUBE and tons of other mediums!
sidebar talking crap on twitter is not considered "grindin" #Imjustsayin ;-)
D - Determination!...this is the strength of will, nothing and no one can deter you from making your dream a reality.

So the next time you tell someone you're on 'your grind'  ARE YOU REALLY?!

TGIFunky - James Brown Edition

Today, after what was essentially a SUPER DUPER rough week, I felt like dancing. When I went through my BlackBerry, in the midst of the 608 songs (yeah I know what your thinking) WHY? I found my subject of today's "Funky Friday".

James Joseph Brown, we call him the GodFather of Soul, but that's just a part of him. The Godfather has always been the epitome of FUNK! When we think of his legacy, we remember dance moves that have been imitated by millions. You play the first 8 bars of ANY James Brown song and you've just created a sing-along. So on this "Funky Friday", I salute the late James Brown.

And finally the KING on the GodFather!!

Retro Thursday - TLC

I loved TLC! The church home that I lived in didn't approve of the colorful condomed attire that they first sported in their classic Arsenio Hall Show appearance...but I wasn't yet over my Cyndi Lauper obsession, so they were perfect for me.

What TLC brought to the music game was a pre Spice Girls sense of individuality for urban girls. T-Boz was my girl, she had that classy edge, Left Eye was everybody's homegirl, Chilli had that exotic presence, not entirely home girl but she was cool on the block.

They had distinct style; they will forever be Crazy, Sexy, Cool.

They had distinct style; they made R&B just a little Crazy, Sexy, Cool.

TGIFunky...Clarence Carter Edition

As I put together the Retro Edition, I remember one particular "artist" that was a mainstay at every outdoor party that I had the privilege to listen to from the bedroom window.

Clarence Carter
This is the man that made songs like ...

I Got Caught Making Love, Take It Off, Sixty Minute Man and Strokin'

It wasn't until much later in life that I realized what that last one meant (honestly thought he was referring to canoeing to his girl, but I digress). When I reflect on the blatant sexual tones of today's music... I wonder what went through the critics minds when they heard theses "inspirational" tunes.

The thing I love about Clarence Carter was the simplicity of the lyrics...this man said EXACTLY what he was thinking. No pretense, no beating around the bush! I think I miss that in music.

This song actually starts "Take off that wig baby, I wanna see on top of your head"

This one has ALWAYS been my personal favorite...sixty minutes though Carter? I LOVE IT!!!

So RIP Clarence Carter...If your music ain't Funky...someone tell me what is.

Until next time have a FUNKY Friday and remember to ....

Retro Thursday - Aunt Bea's Party Songs

I remember before my Aunt "found Jesus", she had the best parties. She was VP of a bank and for the most part, the "events" were glitzy, but she was also friends with a Deejay so he would always be there with the newest hits(told you my life has ALWAYS been surrounded in music).

I remember because we were kids we were often "banished" to one of the bedrooms, but I didn't mind because that always meant that we were not too far from the Deejay. And as I lay beneath the window, not only did I feel the bass come through the floors but the music called out to me through the walls....Okay I'm being dramatic, but honestly with every party I left humming a new song and today during my "Retro Thursday" I remember a few of those tunes!

I think I sang this song everyday for a week...and it's still my life long dream!

I don't know how many of my readership can remember ANY of those songs but they take me back to days when life was just a backyard party away.

Until next time remember to ....

Artists Beware - Part 2 (Mind your Business)

So you want into the "Music Biz". Keep in mind like I said before as much as you love music, it is a "business". So you really have to take cafe of your business. From the moment you pen your first rhyme, sing your first hook you should be attempting to create your individual "brand". Don't understand what I mean?

Even though you make music, you as an artist are a PRODUCT! Simple as that! So, in the midst of your creative process you have to think "PRODUCT".

So when getting into the music business here it is

  • Read the fine print, get a lawyer, and go over it again and again
  • Understand that it's a business and take advantage of your opportunities
  • Keep your head up.You never know when your opportunity is coming so stay prepared. Everything you do can be a stepping stone for something else.
  • Create a market for yourself
  • Beware of "bus riders" - these are the folks that leech off of your potential
  • Have someone else around to give you an honest, non biased opinion and... LISTEN TO THEM!
  •
Next week we'll talk about music promotion. Until then remember ....

      New Music Tuesday

At least once a week on my social networks, with a sigh I exclaim, "I MISS MUSIC." My mother always said to me, "Just as the world is circular in shape, if it is to continue; everything in life must return to it's beginning!" It took me a while to understand that.

But I think I get it, Everything must come full circle if it wants to continue. So even though in it's current state of commercialism music has exasperated me to the hilt, because music is in motion it MUST return to it's unfettered beginnings.

If you don't know who RHYMEFEST is allow me to introduce you. Remember "Jesus Walks, sure you do. Well, Rhymefest had a hand in writing that! His style is unique, his lyrics are well orchestrated. He is the purity of rhyme that hip hop once was.

Rhymefest makes music that reminds me of why I fell in love with Hip Hop. Still don't know what I mean, check this out.

I'll admit that I've been following Rhymefest in "lurk mode" on twitter for some time now, but you can show him that you support good music.

I support music! By now you should know this. This week I give you the music that hopes to become a hit in your heart, your ipod, ipad, whatever you use for music! Here we are with today's new releases...

Ice Cube - I am the West

This Legend deserves a great deal of respect and I expect a great album

      Jeremiah - All About You

I hope all the R&B crooners don't think they could duplicate what I call the "Trey Songz Effect", I mean this is the "Birthday Sex" singer...with this new release let's see what young Jeremih has to offer.

      Ben Folds - Lonely Avenue

I love Ben Folds, when he was with Ben Folds Five, I admit I had a small crush. But that aside, this multi instrumentalist never fails to please me.

      Music Monday - Who's Next?

I hate Mondays! The only good thing about Monday is that Friday is now four days away. So to ease Mondays, Ali Cole In Print has decided to dedicate Mondays to New Artist. The obscure and unheard of artists that need a voice. It could come from anywhere...I'm a ustream, concert, blog, media junkie and sometimes I come across real good stuff. On Mondays, I share....

What do I like about this song? Truthfully, I think I fell in love with the "Habenera" track "(the song from Carmen)! It actually works for me! Anytime some can take a classic and create a marketable hit, they've got my vote!

      So here's to creativity...

      We Want The Funk!

As you can tell I LOVE MUSIC! I remember when my godmother bought me a walkman for Christmas. I saved my allowance, went through my dad's pockets, I went without lunch so that I could walk to the music store and buy one cassette every Wednesday while my mom tutored kids!

Every week I'd make a purchase and make a selection for the next week, I was on a first name basis with the store owner DJ Scooby-Doo (RIP). He soon would let me listen to mixes that he was working on and for me it was magic.

I love R&B but one day DJ Scooby, as he sometimes did, introduced me to something new. He said it was called FUNK. I my attraction was instant. Who's idea was it to combine such an excitement of sound? Who decided to give the brass section of the band, the chance to explore such musical heights? I was in love!

Of course I've committed many a musical infidelity by exploring other musical genres (Don't forget my endless love affair with Hip Hop, no matter how it disappoints me I always return) Funk has always remained faithful! So today, I pay homage to FUNK! From Parliment Funkadelic to George Clinton, from James Brown to Prince!

For making us dance, shake, shimmy, and bop! For making us slide across our mama's newly polished kitchen floors singing into a broom. For allowing us the inhibition to dance in our underwear all through our houses...I honor you!

Ladies and Gentlemen TGIF Thank God It's Funky!!

      Artists Beware - Part 1

Today, I take a break from my regular music updates to write a PSA! The music game has a wonderful lure. But whether you're getting into the music business because you love music,or because you think it's just a non stop party, BUYER BEWARE! Well you know what I mean.

I think if I were to chronicle the many stories of misrepresentation, false promises and just outright cons that I've heard about in the industry I'd have at least a three part book series. It's sad how honest people with real dreams and wide-eyed aspirations end up with hopes destroyed, dreams shattered and a jaded view of the industry. No, it's not all glitz and glamour but some unscrupulous characters can destroy what happens to be a pure art form.

But don't despair, as fun as your music is to you, and as much as you enjoy making music; the music business is just that, BUSINESS! It's work that you enjoy!

Here's a few tips to avoid some pitfalls:

      Rule One: DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

Listen, you don't have to live in New York or Atlanta or Houston (smirk) to get music information on record deals, labels and industry professionals. There's a tool called "the world wide web" and guess what folks it's not just for pornography, it'll surprise you how much information you could get if you look deep enough. Use the Better Business Bureau website. Find out if who the people you are dealing with ARE WHO THEY SAY THEY ARE!!

      Rule Two: WORK YOUR BUSINESS!

You want it, you gotta work for it. Once again, use the internet. You don't have to quit your 9 to 5 and hire a manager just yet. Get your name heard. Start local and create a buzz around whatever you bring to the music scene. If you're good and can get a following, believe me they'll work harder and CHEAPER than any manager ever could.

Rule Three: GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING!

Yes, even when you're working with friends. Even when there is no money involved yet. Beyond the financial reasons, a contract is a good way to clarify working relationships and responsibilities. You'll be able to get things done a lot more effectively if everyone knows where they stand and what is expected of them. Even if it's just, "I'll pay you $50 to sing at my birthday party". In Stores Today

Today is New Release Tuesday, another week of releases. In stores this week

Zac Brown Band “You Get What You Give”

John Legend & the Roots, “Wake Up”

      Paula Cole “Ithaca”

Santana, “Guitar Heaven: The Greatest Guitar Classics of All Time”

After the numbers came in this week, last weeks album sales leader was Trey Songz "Passion, Pain Pleasure" with 166,065 units a considerable 30,000 unit margin over second place Linkin Park. It's understandable. Songz has been a marketing powerhouse over the last year gaining a following by being EVERYWHERE and on everyone's hook. Let's see if any of this weeks releases can dethrone him.

      Music Makers - Charlie Wilson

His parents named him Charles Kent Wilson. Snoop calls him "Uncle Charlie". It works for me. But even if you're unfamiliar with Rapper Snoop Dogg's music, if you've ever heard the GAP BAND you know who Charlie Wilson is.

My parents were deep into gospel music. (Preachers) But I grew up around that Gap Band sound. For me Charlie Wilson was hot and smooth all at the same time. Sure he's old enough to be my father but I'm musical so a good set of vocal pipes will entice me quicker than any lame pick up line or set of chiseled abs will.

I actually own Charlie Wilson's Charlie, Last Name Wilson. I was ecstatic when Uncle Charlie came out in 2009.

I'm sure if you were to ask them today; singers like Guy, Aaron Hall, Keith Sweat, R. Kelly and even more recently R&B crooner Trey Songz can attribute parts of their style to Charlie Wilson!

I thought about "Uncle Charlie" this weekend and just knew that today's blog post had to be dedicated to him.

So from "You Dropped A Bomb On Me" to "There Goes My Baby"... Thanks for Bridging the Gap!

      The Music YOU Want

This an excerpt of a message I wrote to a well known music producer after having read comments addressed to him regarding one of his more popular artist. The comments left me thinking about the way superstars are made.

I begin to wonder if these people actually are listening to the music or just regurgitating stuff they've seen on the blogs.

I, for one have been aching for music that is being made for more than just to sell albums and make label heads happy. But we've been so programmed to love the popular, until even down to having an honest original opinion of what happens to be the sincerest and most widespread form of expression (music) is left for others to tell us what our opinions should be.

Most people don't even realize that the only reason they love most of the music they love is because it's been forced down their throat so much that they THINK they love it!

I want some of these people to give me an analysis of the quality of the music that they hear instead of just repeating the garbage they hear the bloggers say...but sometimes I expect too much from ROBOTS! After all they can only do what they've been programmed to do!

Most of what we deem POPular music is really music that has been marketed to the highest degree until we ourselves believe that it's the best thing! Listen to your mp3 player today what percent of the songs would you have played if you weren't bombarded with it by popular media outlets. The next time you download the "next big hit", here's a consideration....

Do I really like this music, or am I just a product of a brilliant marketing scheme?

      The Music of Passion

About ten minutes ago, I realized I had been listening to the same song for two and a half hours. I smiled because first of all, I'm none to fond of the artist. I mean he's wonderful vocally. But I've grown tired of the boy band soloist kind of artist and I've been seeing that a whole lot lately.

The funny thing about this song is that, I actually woke up to it playing in my head... The also happened to express EVERYTHING I had been feeling the night before. I didn't even realize I knew it melodically enough to have it jukebox itself into my subconscious. I shouldn't be surprised, after all I think that was the original design of music to inspire and evoke a feeling.

It just so happens that the feeling that I had was passion! Whether you create music or just listen to it, today find a song, something that makes you feel alive, or happy and even angry. Play something with passion and see where it takes you.

      Velvet Teddybear

I remember exactly where I was on January 14th when my brother told me Theodore DeReese Pendergrass had died. He knocked on my door and before I fully opened it he blurted out, "How come you ain't told me, Teddy died?" For a moment I was lost, I had a friend named Teddy and I was pretty sure he didn't know him.

      "Teddy who?"
      "Teddy P." he responded.
      "Really?"
      "Yeah, how old was he?"
"In his 50's." I sat staring at the floor.

I was shocked. I started thinking...Michael and Teddy died basically within six months of each other. I mean Michael Jackson's global influence may have been more widespread but Teddy was partially responsible for a lot of people being here. *wink* Even I feel a little sexy when I hear "Close the Door" and that wasn't even my generation's music.

We tend to forget easily; human nature I guess. But I'll always remember, for songs like "When Somebody Loves You Back", "Hold Me", "I Can't Live Without Your Love", "Come Go with Me", "I Want My Baby Back" for leaving the mystery in your love songs.... I honor Teddy “The Velvet Teddy Bear” Pendergrass.

      What Happened To the Music

I wanna go back to a time when the music touched your heart and soul....
      Gladys Knight

I've said it before "I miss music!"

I mentioned in a recent post how when I hear certain songs I get transported mentally to a different time and place where the scenery is so vivid that sometimes I wish to stay. But that's because the music that I loved still existed. Now I'm forced to swallow the "popular" and never get to the depth of it.

I remember my first formal music lesson in college, the instructor said, "Music has to evoke an emotion, otherwise its just words to a melody". I think she was trying to tell us, anyone can make a song, but your feelings make it music.

Lately music has been made just for the dollars. They say it's for the people, but lets be honest, the people will take whatever you give them, so we've taught them about money and pleasure; forgotten about feeling and passion.

I've been hearing a whole lot of artists lately talking about taking it back to the "real" music. I await the conclusion of this matter...I don't think it'll happen but I would welcome it. Maybe the labels will let artist feel again. Maybe the artist will say "the hell with it, I'm recording this song because this is how I feel." Maybe bloggers, writers and reporters will leave their personal views out of their reviews and just breakdown content and quality of the music....

Maybe it can all happen; but this comes from a woman that still believes in love...MAYBE!

      The Soundtrack Of Your Life

I just heard Jermaine Dupri rap to Christopher Cross' "Sailing" with his "Take Me Away" song on his recently released "I Think I'm Berry Gordy" mixtape. Download from his Global 14 blog here. Aside from JD's obvious message to the record and entertainment industry (touches how the industry has changed), I smiled at his choice of music. I smiled because at the very beginning he says, "A lot of you ain't gonna understand this....". I believe it's true.

I felt JD's heart on the whole thing, but more so listening to the track I was transported to a point in my life where things were altogether much more simple. It made me extremely nostalgic. I began to think how much music has played such an important part in my life. So much that there are certain songs that when played it's as if I'm physically in that moment of time.

I remember singing, "I Want to Know What Love Is" on the day I was almost struck by lightning at seven years old, and every time I hear it now I smile! "Man in the Mirror" was playing when I had my first kiss... and more recently, "Tears in Heaven" played in my mind when my grandfather died.

Other songs that would definitely make the Soundtrack of my life would include:-
Up On The Roof - The Drifters
Shape of My Heart - Backstreet Boys
      Lately - Divine
Didn't We Almost Have It All - Whitney Houston
      Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers
      Papa Don't Preach - Madonna
      True Colors - Cyndi Lauper
Saved the Best for Last - Vanessa Williams
      Iris - Goo Goo Dolls

So what does your soundtrack sound like? I like the sound of mine...I think I'll go make a mix CD and call it, In the Key of A - The First Act.

      FAILING CHRISTIANITY

Before I begin allow me to make a grave disclaimer. The following arguments are of a personal nature. Everyone has an opinion, and everyone’s opinion though you may not feel valid at the time, has legitimacy. You may consider this to be one of those times. You may not agree, but it doesn’t make any of it less true.

I was raised devout Pentecostal. As anyone familiar with old time religiosity would know, the Pentecostal Christian knew of Jesus and Church anything outside of those boundaries is considered Unchristian and hell bound. Now that I’m “all grown up” and well, reflective I have begun to wonder what took me so long to address something that has plagued me from my early teens. If I’m to abide in this “Christianity” that allows for a complete absence of living, I refuse to live that.

You see Christianity has failed me and I have failed it.

I was talking to woman one day that doesn’t wear earrings because even in this modern society, she has been taught that if she looks somewhat attractive she’d make Jesus angry. Yes, it almost would be laughable if it wasn’t so sad. She attends one of those churches that preach the about the dangers of vanity and riches. So for the most part most of the people are poor, uneducated and beaten down so much that they don’t have spiritual strength to fight themselves out of a head cold; much less perform any of the “greater works” they read of in their Bibles. When I look at these lemon-faced, unfulfilled people I wonder how they’ll manage in the indulgent heaven (streets of gold?)they that their current lifestyle provides fettered access to. Did I mention that many of them could use a toe head to “extreme makeover”?

It’s interesting how we in Western society, hold a duplicitous yardstick to our Eastern Hemisphere neighbors, denouncing many of them for their strict rules on religion. When for the most part, my take on what we have come to know as Christianity is the belief that by living an enjoyable life in any way you have ultimately entered an unstoppable spiral into hell. The same Eastern religions have a closer “connection” to their religion and the god of their choice and are enjoying the life that they’ve chosen.

I don’t swear. Really, I don’t. Not because of some religious rhetoric, because truth be told, the Christian world has yet to decide on what really constitutes a curse word. What qualified as a swear word as I was growing up is now a justifiable “slip of the tongue” or the simple excuse of “it’s in the Bible you want me to show you”. I don’t curse simply because I consider myself an intellectual and my vocabulary doesn’t really allow for it. Don’t get me wrong, if someone deserves the labeling of a specific quadruped, (jackass) and there is absolutely no other description; they get what they deserve. But my point is that Christianity even with its “clear cut” guidelines has large pot holes.

So Christianity is failing. Don’t believe me. Do some research to find the growth of religion in let’s say the last decade. Find out which religions are growing by leaps and bounds and see how Christianity is lagging. Yet, like all other religions, Mainstream Christianity claims to have a leg up on the competition. The argument is that “truth” will always have the most detractors and that it will prevail unscathed. I hate to believe that Christian fundamentalists really believe this, so I think it’s merely a smoke screen to distract from the real issues. Issue number one; Christianity is failing.

Contrary what some Eastern religions have considered a foundational benchmark; I have only one life. (Until someone can provide actual proof of the theory of reincarnation, it remains a theory in my mind.)
So, I personally think that I would have done both myself and my creator a disservice by not enjoying life. After all isn’t that what has been promised, abundant life? Then I think about this.

The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. John 10:10

This Churchologist Christianity has done the opposite of what that scripture promotes. It produces failures of Christianity by stealing, killing and destroying life. A life that has been given for enjoyment has now become comatose and monotonous.

Ok, before you scream blasphemy; and drag me kicking and screaming to be burnt at the stake. Let’s not be misunderstood. I would never advocate the removal of the moral compass. There are some things that are just a common sense call. There are some things that are a fact of nature and shouldn’t be done. There are some undeniable society no no’s. But when it’s all said and done the creation in homage to the creator must live the life that, if I remember correctly, encourages dominion over all things created. And with power comes enjoyment. God has final dominion over all things and with everything taught about the Godhead we are told that he enjoys the creation. I’m a God child. I believe in Christianity and the salvation of Jesus Christ to set a soul free, but I feel like this adopted Christianity has ultimately failed and I know I’m not solo in this.

We are all with our faults so I must confess that I have also failed Christianity. I have failed because every time I hear the “Electric Slide” or Chubby Checker’s “Twist” I’m going to dance. And because as dumb as it looks, I want someone to actually teach me how to "Dougie". I get a failing grade at Christianity because whenever I’m invited to a party with a secular or a “church” friend; I’m going and I’ll leave feeling like I had a good time. I’ve failed because I think that R. Kelly, Usher Raymond, Trey Songz and Lauryn Hill are musical geniuses. My incomplete mark for a passing grade at Christianity will always exist simply because I love a broad shouldered man who although raised devout Catholic now flaunts the word “FREEDOM” etched across his lower back and I think “God, he’s beautiful”.

Because he too has failed Christianity, or maybe …..
